Church publications offer differing views on Lebanon, Hezbollah
Two very influential Catholic publications have published sharply contrasting views on the future of Lebanon and the role of the Hezbollah movement, notes Sandro Magister of L'Espresso.
Civilta Cattolica, the Jesuit journal whose articles are cleared in advance by the Vatican Secretariat of State, acknowledged the growing power of Hezbollah in Lebanon, but suggested that the movement has become more a "nationalist" phenomenon than an Islamic fundamentalist group. But Oasis, the journal founded by Cardinal Angelo Scola of Venice to examine inter-religious affairs in the Middle East, finds that Hezbollah remains committed to Islamic jihad.
